Hell after Death in Islam

By Khandaker Nazneen Sultana

An-Nu`man ibn Bashir (RA) narrated that he heard the Prophet (SAW) said: "The least torture in the Hell on the Day of Judgment is that of a man whose foot sole is laid on a live coal which causes his brain to boil just like a boiler."-- [Bukhari and Muslim]
Prophet Hazrat  Muhammad (SAW) told: "He does not think that any other person is tortured more severely than him although he is in the least torture."--[Muslim]

Abu Huraira (RA) narrated: “This fire of yours which burns the son of Adam (in this world) is the seventieth part of the heat of the Hell. They say: 'We swear by Allah, our fire is quite enough. The Prophet said: 'It is sixty nine times more and each part of it is like the heat of your fire."-- [Muslim]

Abu Huraira said that the Prophet (SAW) anounced: "The Hell complained to her Rabb: O my Rabb! I am eating myself. He allowed her two breaths: One in winter and the other one in summer, and that is why you feel the heat in Summer and the cold in Winter."
 --(Bukhari and Muslim)

Samura narrated that he heard the Prophet, (SAW) said: “ Fire holds some to their ankle bones, some to their knees, some to their waists, and some up to their collarbones."
 --[Muslim]

This Hadith is a statement for the variation in degrees in the punishment of those in the Hell. We seek protection of Allah from it and from anything that leads to it whether word or deed.
In the world man has a certain amount of choice and free will. One can be best or worst by one’s own choice. Allah Almighty Will punish everyone for the bad deeds that they committed. In the Noble Quran we find that the most painful level of Hell is for the hypocrites.  The Quran emphatically asserts that death is not the final end but a gateway to a different kind of life: It also appears that Muslims, no matter how bad they were, will win Paradise as their Ultimate Reward after they receive their punishment.
Allah has also described about Hell in many places in the Qur’an, so let us now take a look at what He has in store for the non-believers.
Hell after Death in IslamFrom the view of The Al-Qur’an
In Surah An-Nisaa verses no. 56 Allah mentions:
4.56. Those who reject our Signs, We shall soon cast into the Fire: as often as their skins are roasted through, We shall change them for fresh skins, that they may taste the penalty: for Allah is Exalted in Power, Wise.
In Surah Al-An’am verses no.   27 Allah says:
6.27. If thou couldst but see when they are confronted with the Fire! They will say: "Would that we were but sent back! Then would we not reject the signs of our Lord, but would be amongst those who believe!"
In Surah Hud verses no. 106, 107, 119 Allah notices:
11.106. Those who are wretched shall be in the Fire: There will be for them therein (nothing but) the heaving of sighs and sobs:
11.107. They will dwell therein for all the time that the heavens and the earth endure, except as thy Lord willeth: for thy Lord is the (sure) accomplisher of what He planneth.
11.119. Except those on whom thy Lord hath bestowed His Mercy: and for this did He create them: and the Word of thy Lord shall be fulfilled: "I will fill Hell with jinns and men all together."
In Surah Ibrahim verses no. 16, 17, 49, 50 Allah express:
14.16. In front of such a one is Hell, and he is given, for drink, boiling fetid water.
14.17. In gulps will he sip it, but never will he be near swallowing it down his throat: death will come to him from every quarter, yet will he not die: and in front of him will be a chastisement unrelenting.
14.49. And thou wilt see the sinners that day bound together in fetters;-
14.50. Their garments of liquid pitch, and their faces covered with Fire;
In Surah Al-Hijr verses no. 43- 44 Allah remarks:
15.43. And verily, Hell is the promised abode for them all!
15.44. To it are seven gates: for each of those gates is a (special) class (of sinners) assigned.
In Surah Maryam verses no. 69, 70 Allah relates:
19.69. Then shall We certainly drag out from every sect all those who were worst in obstinate rebellion against ((Allah)) Most Gracious.
19.70. And certainly We know best those who are most worthy of being burned therein.
In Surah Ta-Ha verses no. 74 Allah informs:
20.74. Verily he who comes to his Lord as a sinner (at Judgment),- for him is Hell: therein shall he neither die nor live.
In Surah Al- Hajj verses no. 19 -22 Allah explains:
22.19. These two antagonists dispute with each other about their Lord: But those who deny (their Lord),- for them will be cut out a garment of Fire: over their heads will be poured out boiling water.
22.20. With it will be scalded what is within their bodies, as well as (their) skins.
22.21. In addition there will be maces of iron (to punish) them.
22.22. Every time they wish to get away therefrom, from anguish, they will be forced back therein, and (it will be said), "Taste ye the Penalty of Burning!"
In Surah Al-Muminun verses no. 107, 108 Allah mentions:
23.107. "Our Lord! bring us out of this: if ever we return (to Evil), then shall we be wrong-doers indeed!"
23.108. He will say: "Be ye driven into it (with ignominy)! And speak ye not to Me!
In Surah Al-Furkan verses no. 11 -14 Allah notices:
25.11. Nay they deny the hour (of the judgment to come): but We have prepared a blazing fire for such as deny the hour:
25.12. When it sees them from a place fAr off, they will hear its fury and its ranging sigh.
25.13. And when they are cast, bound together into a constricted place therein, they will pLead for destruction there and then!
25.14. "This day plead not for a single destruction: plead for destruction oft- repeated!"
In Surah Ash-Shu’araa verses no. 96- 103, 189 Allah states:
26.96. "They will say there in their mutual bickerings:
26.97. "'By Allah, we were truly in an error manifest,
26.98. "'When we held you as equals with the Lord of the Worlds;
26.99. "'And our seducers were only those who were steeped in guilt.
26.100. "'Now, then, we have none to intercede (for us),
26.101. "'Nor a single friend to feel (for us).
26.102. "'Now if we only had a chance of return we shall truly be of those who believe!'"
26.103. Verily in this is a Sign but most of them do not believe.
26.189. But they rejected him. Then the punishment of a day of overshadowing gloom seized them, and that was the Penalty of a Great Day.
In Surah As- Sajda verses no. 12-14, 20 – 22 Allah announces:
32.12. If only thou couldst see when the guilty ones will bend low their heads before their Lord, (saying:) "Our Lord! We have seen and we have heard: Now then send us back (to the world): we will work righteousness: for we do indeed (now) believe."
32.13. If We had so willed, We could certainly have brought every soul its true guidance: but the Word from Me will come true, "I will fill Hell with Jinns and men all together."
32.14. "Taste ye then - for ye forgot the Meeting of this Day of yours, and We too will forget you - taste ye the Penalty of Eternity for your (evil) deeds!"
32.20. As to those who are rebellious and wicked, their abode will be the Fire: every time they wish to get away therefrom, they will be forced thereinto, and it will be said to them: "Taste ye the Penalty of the Fire, the which ye were wont to reject as false."
32.21. And indeed We will make them taste of the Penalty of this (life) prior to the supreme Penalty, in order that they may (repent and) return.
32.22. And who does more wrong than one to whom are recited the Signs of his Lord, and who then turns away therefrom? Verily from those who transgress We shall exact (due) Retribution.
In Surah Al- Ahzab verses no. 66- 68 Allah notices:

33.68. "Our Lord! Give them double Penalty and curse them with a very great Curse!"
In Surah Fatir verses no. 45 Allah express:

37.63. For We have truly made it (as) a trial for the wrong-doers.
37.64. For it is a tree that springs out of the bottom of Hell-Fire:
37.65. The shoots of its fruit-stalks are like the heads of devils:
37.66. Truly they will eat thereof and fill their bellies therewith.
37.67. Then on top of that they will be given a mixture made of boiling water.
37.68. Then shall their return be to the (Blazing) Fire.
In Surah Sad verses no. 55- 58 Allah mentions:

The answer will be: "True: but the Decree of Punishment has been proved true against the Unbelievers!"

40.12. (The answer will be:) "This is because, when Allah was invoked as the Only (object of worship), ye did reject Faith, but when partners were joined to Him, ye believed! the Command is with Allah, Most High, Most Great!"
40.49. Those in the Fire will say to the Keepers of Hell: "Pray to your Lord to lighten us the Penalty for a day (at least)!"
40.50. They will say: "Did there not come to you your apostles with Clear Signs?" They will say, "Yes". They will reply, "Then pray (as ye like)! But the prayer of those without Faith is nothing but (futile wandering) in (mazes of) error!"

74.30. Over it are Nineteen.
74.31. And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this ?" 104.7. The which doth mount (Right) to the Hearts:
104.8. It shall be made into a vault over them,

Some hadith  about hell after Death in Islam:
Narrated Anas:
The Prophet (SAW) said, “Some people who will be scorched by Hell (Fire) as a punishment for sins they have committed, and then Allah will admit them into Paradise by the grant of His Mercy. These people will be called, ‘Al-JahannamiyyLin’ (the people of Hell).” -- Volume 9, Book 93, Number 542:

Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah, may Allah have mercy on him, was asked: "What are the deeds of the people of Hell, and what are the deeds of the people of Paradise?"
He replied: "The deeds of the people of Hell are:
associating partners with Allah, disbelieving in His Messengers, kufr (ingratitude, disbelief), hasad (malicious envy), lying,  treachery,  oppression and wrongdoing (dhulm), promiscuity, backstabbing , cutting off the ties of kinship,  cowardice at the time of jihad,  miserliness ,inconsistency between what is in one's heart and the face one shows to people, despairing of the mercy of Allah, feeling insecure from the plan of Allah, panicking blindly at the time of crisis, pride and extravagance at the time of plenty,
abandoning one's duties towards Allah,  transgressing His limits, violating His sanctity,
fearing a created being instead of the Creator, going against the Qur'an and Sunnah in word or deed, obeying a created being in some act of disobedience to the Creator,
blindly supporting falsehood , mocking the Signs of Allah,  rejecting the truth,
withholding knowledge and testimony that should be revealed, witchcraft and magic,
disobeying one's parents, killing any soul forbidden by Allah except for reasons of justice, consuming the wealth of the orphan , riba (usury), desertion from the battlefield ,
slandering the reputation of innocent, chaste, believing women."-- [Yaqadhat uli al-I`tibar, p. 222] The Messenger (SAW), mentioned all these above sins that will lead one to Hell.

Narrated Ibn Abbas: The Prophet (SAW) said: "I was shown the Hell-fire and that the majority of its dwellers were women who were ungrateful." It was asked, "Do they disbelieve in Allah?" (or are they ungrateful to Allah?) He replied, they are ungrateful to their husbands and are ungrateful for the favours and the good (charitable deeds) done to them. If you have always been good (benevolent) to one of them and then she sees something in you (not of her liking), she will say, 'I have never received any good from you.'" --(Sahih Al-Bukhari Vol 1).

`Iyaad ibn Himaar repoted that the Messenger of Allah (SAW), said, during a lengthy khutbah:
"...The people of Hell are five: the weak who lack the power to (avoid evil); the (carefree) who pursue (everything irrespective of whether it is good or evil) and who have no concern for their families and their wealth; the dishonest people whose greed cannot be cocealed even in the case of minor things; and those who betray you, morning and evening, with regard to your family and your property. He also mentioned misers, liars, and those who are in the habit of abusing people and using obscene, foul language."
--[Muslim, 4/1297, no. 2865]
