Quality of a leader in Islam

Khandaker Nazneen Sultana

Professor of American Chicago University Judom Masserman in his book ‘ Who is the greatest leader of world’ point out that Mohammad (SAW) is the greatest leader of the universe for all time.

The greatest historian Sir William Mur said, He (Prophet Mohammad (SAW) was the master mind not only of his own age but all ages.   He posses all the good qualities like, modesty and kindness, self-denial and occupied the affection of others.

A knowledge-based leader is a pre-requisite for effective leadership. It has already been universally accepted that knowledge is the most priced capital. A leader should no longer be dependent on his subordinates. He is expected to know himself. As the Prophet Muhammad said, "All Muslims must pursue knowledge, pursue knowledge from the cradle to the graves".

This hadith stresses the importance of being knowledgeable. A leader must also be able to articulate and be eloquent in what he does. As a leader, he is expected to make decisions, and decisions could only be made with information and a sound knowledge of the job.

People should be able to freely voice their views or objections and have their questions answered. Obviously this can be seen from the famous inaugural speech by the first Caliph Abu Bakr, "O people! You have selected me as your leader although I am not the best among you. If I do right, support me; if I am wrong set me right. Obey me when I obey Allah and His Messenger. If I go against the injunction of Allah and His Prophet, then no obedience is due from you."

Such is the quality that leaders should all strive for. They should strive to create an atmosphere of freethinking, healthy exchange of ideas, criticisms and mutual advises so that the people feel very comfortable to discuss any matters or issues arising. Therefore, leaders must accept criticism.

If we look at the successful people who really made accomplishments in their lives, we can see that they truly persevere in facing challenges.

For instance, Thomas Edison had 1,350 unsuccessful attempts at creating the light bulb and yet persevered. As the famous Einstein said, "I think and think for months and years. Ninety-nine times, the conclusion is false. The hundredth time I am right." In other words, an effective leader has the self-confidence and vision in facing any kind of risk. The best example of all is the Prophet Muhammad himself. Although his own tribes and relatives had isolated him, yet he made Islam a universal religion.

Good leadership moves people in a direction that is truly in their long-term best interest. An honest leader is one who leads and not the one who manipulate to lead. A successful leader is one who attains his ends in the best possible manner, with the least inconvenience to the team, at the minimum cost, in record time and with a high quality performance. With modern techniques, there are several ways of doing this but the path adopted by the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) is the best, for it was with the divine guidance of Allah that he became the supreme leader of the human race.
Allah has also described about leadership in many places in the Qur’an, so let us now take a look at what He has in store for the believers.

When they crossed the river,- He and the faithful ones with him,- they said: "This day We cannot cope with Goliath and his forces." but those who were convinced that they must meet Allah, said: "How oft, by Allah.s will, Hath a small force vanquished a big one? Aim full Target:
A leader must have to poses right and specific target. His arrow may not miss to hit the target or mark. His strategies have to be soft and flexible. A leader who does not know his destination, purpose, objective and intention cannot really lead.
In Surah Al-i- Imran verses no. 153 Allah express:

There did Allah give you one distress after another by way of requital, to teach you not to grieve for (the booty) that had escaped you and for (the ill) that had befallen you. For Allah is well aware of all that ye do.

In Surah An-Nur verses no. 22 Allah says:
24:22. Let not those among you who are endued with grace and amplitude of means resolve by oath against helping their kinsmen, those in want, and those who have left their homes in Allah.s cause: let them forgive and overlook, do you not wish that Allah should forgive you? For Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
To conclude, the qualities of the best leader are many. No leader can have all of them. Suffice if some of these qualities are found in or are internalized by our present leaders. It is equally important that the leader eschews bad qualities, unconsciously or consciously.

All prophets’ was also the leader of their period. They led the kingly power, the gifts of wisdom, justice, psalmody and prophet’ hood were bestowed on him as a trust.
The qualities of leadership are actually the gift of Allah. Islamic leaders are holding strongly the massage of Al-Quran and Hadith. They believe the revelation, which commands well and forbids evil, justice, which gives to that person his due and the strong arm of the law.
