Fire panic leaves 50 RMG workers injured in N’ganj

At least 50 workers, mostly females, were injured as they jostled to come out of a readymade garment factory at Fatulla in Narayanganj, following a fire alarm Monday night.
All the injured workers were rushed to the Khanpur hospital for treatment, officer-in-charge of Fatulla thana Md Akter Hossain said.
Police and fire brigade service sources said a rumour about fire spread in Abanti Colour Tex Unit-2 at Panchabati BSCIC industrial zone.
The workers tried to escape through the exit stair, which resulted in stampede.
Labour affair standing committee chairman of the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association GM Faruk, however, said the alarm bell was mistakenly rung.
Panicked by the alarm, most of the female workers tried to rush out of the factory, which led to the collapse of the staircase railing on the fourth floor of the factory, he said.
Faruk also claimed that all the injured were given compensation of Tk 2,000 each.
The factory was running today in full swing, he also added.
