Sylhet Lalbazar fish market announced free of formalin



The Sylhet city mayor, Badar Uddin Ahmad Kamran, on Sunday called for developing awareness among people to put up resistance against the use of formalin in food.
He said conscious people could be build up a strong movement against misuse of formalin, a harmful chemical for human body, by an unscrupulous quarter to make brisk business.
‘Most of the retail fish traders do not know that the fish they have bought from the wholesalers were treated with formalin. So they have to face an embarrassing situation when any drive against formalin is launched at a market,’ the mayor added.
He made the observations while addressing as chief guest at a programme organised by the Lalbazar Fish Traders’ Association.
He also announced Lalbazar fish market, the biggest retail fish market in the Sylhet city, free of formalin and launched a testing machine at the market in the afternoon.
BSTI regional director Rezaul Haque and Standard Bank Limited regional chief Gajanfar Ali and SCC ward councillor Muzibur Rahman Shawkat addressed the programme as special guests.
Lalbazar liaison committee convener Azad Miah chaired the programme, which was addressed, among others, by Lalbazar Traders Union president Enayet Hossain and freedom fighter Altafur Rahman.   
The BSTI officials, after the inaugural session, checked the fishes at the market and found them free of formalin.
