Locals build bridge on their own in Barisal

Local people have constructed a 700-yard bamboo-bridge over a channel of the River Arial Kha at Muladi in Barisal, spending Tk 10 lakh from their own fund.
Around 5,000 residents, including 500 students of three schools in Char Commissioner and Kazir Char unions of the upazila, will be benefited by the bridge.
This work was done to observe the 42nd anniversary of the country’s independence.
‘As local administration failed to provide fund, we could not set up a concrete bridge. We therefore generated a fund on our own to construct the bamboo bridge,’ said Sattar, one of the villagers.
Mezbahuddin Farhad, local BNP lawmaker, praising the initiative, said as the locals elected a lawmaker from the opposition party, they were often deprived of development funds.
‘However I will manage at least five tonnes of rice for maintenances of the bridge,’ he added.
